Peng Yu
Peng Yu is a PhD candidate in modern Japanese history in the Department of East Asian Studies. His research focuses on the language problem of Manchukuo within the Japanese Empire. By linking the language problem to population police, class struggle, and the production of racial and national difference, his research explores how both the Japanese Empire and Manchukuo sought to respond to the crises of capitalism and subjectivity through the deconstruction and reconstruction of “Manchu language” in Manchuria.
Peng Yu is fluent in Japanese and Chinese, and is currently studying Korean and Manchu language (manju gisun). Outside his research, he also enjoys teaching and reflecting on pedagogical practice. He has served as a teaching assistant for EAS209 Critical Approaches to East Asia for four consecutive years and received the Graduate Teaching Excellence Award in 2024.
